History of Atemi Arnis
Professor Florendo M. Visitacion or as he is commonly called, Professor Vee, was
born in Ilocos Norte, Philippines in 1910.
He began informal training in Arnis at the age of ten. His studies included a
ten-year study of Arnis Lanada. In addition to this training, he went on to study under
Master Amante Mariñas, and Grandmaster Remy Presas of the school of Modern
Arnis. In addition, he also received training from Leo Gaje, a noted expert in Pekiti
Tirsia, a Kali system. In 1978, the Arnis America Organization headed by
Grandmaster Gaje gave him the Datu award in recognition for his work in promoting
Filipino martial arts. Five years later, he also received the prestigious instructor's
rank from Master Mariñas and the World Arnis Federation.
Arnis is a dynamic and fast moving art well adapted to
today's environment. It focuses on movements easily
applied to stick and knife fighting as well as unarmed
combat. Unlike some martial weapon arts, it is particularly
well suited to an environment in which any thing could be a
weapon, a baseball bat, a car antenna, a pipe, a broken
bottle, a switchblade, etc. Arnis includes disarming an
armed opponent, stick fighting, knife fighting, and open hand
attack and defence. A relative of jujitsu, Arnis is devastatingly
effective. It has the flow of a dance but the bite of a true
martial art.
